19th Annual Costume Exhibition- FIDM

Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising once again opened their doors for industry members and alumni for the “19th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design” reception. There were costumes on display from such blockbusters as: Shutter Island, The Young Victoria, True Grit, Alice in Wonderland, Burlesque, Clash of the Titans, Nanny McPhee Returns and much more. The costumes were wonderfully done and it was cool to be them up close and in person, as you can see how tall the actor and any little hidden detail that you may have missed while watching the movie. I would have to say that my top three favorite picks from the exhibit are: Burlesque. They were designed by Michael Kaplan and were stunning. Words cannot describe the beauty in the colors and detailing of the gowns and lingerie. The Alice and Wonderland part was my absolute fave! The costumes were designed by Colleen Atwood. When I saw the costuming in the movie, I was immediately blown-away at the avant-garde Tim Burton-esque gowns. I loved the halter gown with ruffled neckline. It’s very “me.” Lastly, I admired the gown designed by Sandy Powell for The Young Victoria. Loved the purple hue and floral decoration!

Besides the exhibition, were two giant buffets and an open bar happening in the tents outside. That evening’s weather proved to be perfect for such an outdoorsy event. I also wanted to mention that jewelry designer and FIDM alum, Joe Viboonviriyawong was showcasing some pieces of his line- Vilaiwan. For all you celebrities and stylists out there, vying for that “one” piece of jewelry for the red carpet or editorial, Joe is your go-to man. His pieces are breathtaking. The line was named after his mother- Vilaiwan, in honor of her supporting his passion. Each piece is unique and one-of-a-kind. He is definitely one of LA’s next major jewelry designer!

The exhibition is open from February 8th- April 30th and is FREE to the public. Hours are Tuesday- Saturday 10am-pm and is located at the FIDM Museum 919 S. Grand Ave. 90015.
