Directives West Presents "First.LA" (LAFW 2010)

Directives West (Oct. 2011 edition)

The October 2011 Directives West showing of Spring 2012 trends and fashions was held on the patio at the California Market Center in LA’s fashion district. The show was hosted by guest ‘GLAM-bassadors’: Kelly Lee of the fashion and style blog- BussBuss, Kristen Turner of the popular DIY blog, Glitter n’ Glue and celebrity stylist and blogger- Lauren Shane of Elshane.

Trends that were highlighted during the show include (all info on trends is courtesy of Directives West):

Social Heritage

~Cultivate a return to crisp basics and delicate heirloom wovens as thoughts of simpler times fill the air for spring. American vintage is a romanticized expression of a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude, leisure and effortless dressing.

World Treasures

~Celebrate diversity through multicultural escapes and limitless boundaries. A free spirit floats through a world of curiousity as Eastern influences along with Sahara sands are crafted with strength and grace.

Rapture

~Striking imagery, clashing graphics and mismatched combinations empower her. Embrace the theatrics as well as the digital cosmos. Fluidity seeps through this hyperactivity in new zenith dimensions.

The Sophisticate

~Futuristic minimalism continues as we embrace a deconstructed and transparent world. Flat and simply structured fabrics communicate harmony and composure while luminescence shines through.

The runway presentation boasted several looks from each trend from brands such as: Whitney Eve, Cameo, Skies are Blue, Ketz-Ke, Again, Miilla, Willow & Clay, J.A.K, Plastic Island, Language, Kersh, Gracia, Blondes Make Better T-Shirts, go.make.noise., Lolly, Denimocracy, etc. I personally loved pieces from Again, Skies are Blue, Whitney Eve and Cameo. I’m happy to see that the tribal print and mixing ‘n matching prints/patterns/graphics will still be around, as well as the chiffon maxi skirt and pant(which I’m currently obsessing over!). I wasn’t a huge fan of the fishtail hemline at first, but after seeing the ways it was styled on the runway, it got me to change my mind and I think I’ll be including it in my wardrobe. I love that color-blocking is still a favorite trend for Spring as well, and that you can play around with the colors, like putting together an outfit with bright colors one day or neutral shades the next. After seeing the show, I am eager to start putting together my Spring 2012 wardrobe! How about YOU?? What are your favorite Spring 2012 must-haves/trends??

Directives West Presents "First.LA" (LAFW 2010)

The first show I attended during LAFW 2010 was the First.LA show in the penthouse of the Cooper Building. First LA was presented by the group, Directives West. Directives West is the West Coast merchandising consulting division of The Donegar Group. Their mission statement is “We provide clients with comprehensive market analysis in all categories of business, including womens contemporary, better, junior, moderate, accessories, mens, young mens and childrens, with the unique perspective and indisputable influence of West Coast fashion and lifestyle.” According to V.P/G.M.M Janine Blain, First.LA was the first contemporary show in LA. Usually the contemporary market doesn’t have the opportunity to show, but nevertheless, the show was a huge success.  Of all the Fall 2010’s Seasonal Trends: ‘The Big Stitch’, ‘Luxe Military’, ‘Boudoir Treasures’, and ‘Game On’; Janine felt that ‘The Big Stitch’ and ‘Luxe Military’ were this season’s key trends.

Before the show, I chatted with fellow fashionistas and old friends, while meeting another friend Ashleigh McGrew, who is also a blogger, and her boyfriend Nick.
Ashleigh and I sat in the front row and watched as looks from over thirty brands (from the Cal-Mart, New Mart and Cooper Buildings) sashayed down the runway. My favorites included pieces from Black Collection, warm comfy knit sweaters, fun hippy-inspired pieces by Thursday Island, beautiful natural stone necklaces by Dara Ettinger, bold pieces from Niki Shadrow’s line, “Positively Bold” and willowy sequined tops by Dolan.

Special Thanks: Lauren Stillman of LSPR (www.laurenstillmanpr.com), J, Ashleigh McGrew & Nick, Ilse Metchek of the California Fashion Association (www.calfashion.org), Janine Blaine of Directives West (213-627-8306 110 E. 9th St. Suite A227 LA 90079) and of course, all the designers and models!
