Concept 3rd Night (Jen Awad & MILA)

The last night of Concept LAFW, I had the opportunity to see the collections of Jen Awad and MILA (I unfortunately didn’t make the Bryan Hearns show). Jen’s collection was titled, “Dolls After Dark”- a fairytale dream of dolls and playing dress-up. The models played up the part while boasting Lady Gaga shades. Jen’s signature visible stitching was evident in most of the looks, as well as the bustier and sweetheart necklines. Her logo even made an appearance on a dress and top. My favorite looks were the lavender sparkly dress, the skirts with the flirty draping and ruffles and the short and longer pleated dresses with circles at the bust. MILA designer Mila Hermanovski (and Project Runway season 7 finalist) titled her collection, “Rutilated.” She was inspired by her fascination with mineral formations and the layers of opacities and textures at which they grow and appear. She used mostly all natural silks, cottons and leathers in her collection. “The play of scale and print, in addition, add a surreal touch and refer to the other side of the paradox which is the man-made object that attempts to look natural.” I loved the loose, flowy fit of some of the dresses, along with the geometric prints. The accessories also were very earthy and geometric and worked well with the collection and did I mention that I want a pair of the cute leggings in my closet?!

The installations that night were Katie Kay, Curly-V with Mercura NY sunglasses, Poly Chic and Kao Pao Shu. Curly -V’s installation indeed brought a smile to my face. This was his first collection since working with Jeremy Scott. His designs were bold and unique. My favorite piece-a dress that had yellow hearts with smiley faces on them. “Curly-V is for the dreamers of the world- it represents the beauty of the people and their unrelenting spirit to follow their dreams…” For orders or lookbook inquiries: curly.v.apparel@gmail.com. Curly-V was also helping with the small Mercura NY sunglasses display. Designed by Rachel Cohen-Lunning and Merrilee Lichtenstein Cohen of NY, these haute sunnies can be seen on celebrities and in a lot of editorials. Designer Ela Acosta presented some looks from her “Poly-Chic” (short for Polyurethane-Chic) collection. I loved the futuristic looks (especially the blue draped skirt) and I loved how she was able to play with and manipulate the fabrics and plastic. To learn more about her vision and concept of her “Poly-Chic” collection, check out her site. Kao Pao Shu’s Naida Begeta presented her latest collection: “Draw Yourself Up.” This collection is more ready-to-wear for any occasion. The pieces have screen prints of Naida’s drawings and abstract art concepts. According to the press release: Each exclusive drawing is transferred onto fully constructed pieces of clothing, instead of rolls of fabrics, to be sewed together in a second moment. This allows the eye to receive a different image and impression based on how the piece is worn… I must say, Naida has done it again! She is very talented in that she makes couture-like pieces made of ribbons and seat belts to making these carefully constructed pieces with her own drawings that are screen printed on them, and the image is different every time, depending on how the individual wears it. I would also like to give loads of credit to Naida’s husband and photographer- Marco for the lovely display of the photos he shot of the models at the last KPS event. They were stunning! For more on KPS, check out the site or my other article here.

Kao Pao Shu Showroom Grand Opening

Emerging brand Kao Pao Shu held their showroom grand opening in Santa Monica. The showroom is housed in a converted 5000 sq. ft. warehouse. It was a bustling evening, filled with shopping the collection, getting your portrait taken by Kao Pao Shu designer Naida’s husband-Marco, watching a live photo shoot with models styled by Studio DNA Salon and stylist- Devon Poer; and enjoying hors ‘d ouvers. I viewed the collection of tops, skirts, dresses and handbags made from the signature ribbons, webbings and fabrics found around the world. I had the delightful opportunity of meeting the brain behind the designs- Naida Begeta, born in Bosnia and graduated from the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Arts with a degree in product design. All her pieces are manufactured here in the US and are a hit in Japan (I can even see hints of Japanese influence in her avant-garde creations). I also watched as the four models got styled in couture make-up by Studio DNA Salon and after getting styled by Devon Poer, were escorted to the makeshift photo studio that was set up in a corner of the warehouse. It was exciting seeing the live photo shoot taking place and the incredible energy from the photographer, models and guests.

Kao Pao Shu showroom is located at: 1906 Olympic Blvd. Santa Monica,CA 90404. Ph:(310)453-1919. Hours: Monday – Friday 9:30am-6.30pm or Saturday by appointment.

Simply Stylist

Not even the rain could stop the industry’s top PR firms and stylists (and even yours truly) from attending Simply Stylist at the Siren-Orange Studios in Hollywood.  Simply Stylist takes on the concept of a “pop-up showroom” created by sisters, Caroline Rothwell and Sarah Pollack in order to connect emerging designers to the likes of top celebrities and stylists.

I spent the first part of my Simply Stylist experience in the “salon” part of the studio. I received my first mini-manicure from OPI experts, Terri and Annette. But the pampering didn’t stop there… I  was treated to an oxygen facial by Rosalina of Bliss Spa. It was the best ten minutes ever! The cold mist soothed my face and the best part was that I didn’t have to take off my make-up! My face ended up soft and with some glow to it. Next, my hand and arms indulged in a refreshing massage by Vera and Shiho of Bliss Spa. Finally, as an added courtesy my hair was styled by Sarah Merrie of Hairroin Salon.

Next, I satisfied my fashion fix by checking out the brands that were showcasing at the event. I browsed handbags and clutches available in a variety of vibrant colors, my fav being the “Tropical” print from the brand Hobo International.  I saw more studding clutches and handbags from Rafe New York…. The must-have clutches from Rafe, in my opinion has got to be the ‘stainless steel and abalone shell clutch’ or the multi-colored knit clutch.  Then, there were the yummy blue snakeskin gladiator sandals or the laser-cut booties from Paul & Joe Sister.

I explored brands like Kao Pao Shu…. a collection of dresses, purses made entirely out of ribbon, men’s ties, etc…designed by 28 year old Bosnian Naida Begeta, who just wanted a new handbag…..but in the end, launched an entire avant-garde clothing line. Kao Pao Shu is based in LA. The line is manufactured in Santa Monica and they have a showroom located at 7227 Beverly Blvd. For more info, go to www.kaopaoshu.it.

The next designer, who wasn’t at the event, but nevertheless, left me breathless with his gowns, skirts and jackets. He is Mohammed Ashi, the 24 year old Saudi designer of Ashi. His clothing is elegantly draped and intricately detailed with the upmost care. He chose subtle, muted whites, nudes, greys and blacks as his palette. I hope to see more of his clothing on the red carpet. His website, www.ashistudio.com is still under construction, but keep checking back. In the meantime, he can be reached at ashistudio@gmail.com or become a fan of Ashi Studio on Facebook!

One designer who I had the pleasure of meeting was Ronald Abdala from Beirut. Again, his designs, I’d love to see on the red carpet. His gowns from the “Simulation” collection are very feminine and and avant-garde. He also offered pieces that could convienently be converted from the work place to dinner with friends. For more on Ronald, go to www.ronaldabdala.com or become a fan on Facebook.

I now want to introduce Oday Shakar, hailing from Costa Mesa and just started designing three months prior to Simply Stylist. His collection of red carpet worthy gowns are ment for women who want an escape in their lives through wardrobe. His silhouettes, inspired by Old Hollywood are very elegant, feminine and whimsical. Also being displayed at his booth were jewelry by his friend, Julia Post. He takes the jewelry with him every time he presents his collection. For more information on Oday, contact him at www.odayshakar.com, info@odayshakar.com or (714)641-0316.

The last designer I caught up with was Mike Vensel, who’s model was wearing a mini black dress with feathered armholes. This guy is truly a multi-tasker; being an artist, fashion designer, editor of Kitten Magazine, graphic designer and architect. I can definitely tell he used all his talents in his collections. Visit www.mikevensel.com for more information.

This event also featured make-up artist Hala Ajam, from Beirut. She was on-hand to answer questions and sign her book,  Face to Face. I proudly own a copy of the book and am amazed at her work. Her dramatic make-up talents entice every mood and color palette. If I were walking the red carpet for the Emmys or Oscars, I’d want her to take care of my face! Go to www.halaajam.com for more information.

I received my first pair of TOMS Shoes. They are the white canvas and hand-painted by Tyler Ramsey. The shoes are incredibly comfy and environmentally friendly. www.tomsshoes.com

I started the day and ended the day chatting with a small group of girls who were showing their art in Simply Stylist. They are Sara Prado, Bita A., Syreeta McKelvey and Christine Hahn of  The Fear. The Fear is a movement of artists with various talents that come together and create the unimaginable. ‘The Fear means artistic expression without the worry of acceptance.’ I enjoyed talking with them and hearing about the collective. As a fellow artist myself, I could understand where they were coming from. I loved the artwork and the funky DIYed wayferer frames. Christine is a photographer and an amazing one at that. Check out her site at www.christinehahnphoto.com. To contact The Fear, email them at ohmyfear@gmail.com.

It was a memorable experience and I’m looking forward to next year’s event!
