Alon Livne – NYFW September 2014

Young Israeli designer Alon Livne learned the fundamentals of fashion design while working at high-end European fashion houses starting at the tender age of 17. Since then, he has also worked for Alexander McQueen and worked in the evening wear and couture division at Roberto Cavalli. While there, he worked on orders for celebrities and custom work for international royals. After breaking out on his own, he won first place during Israel’s version of “Project Runway,” gaining world-wide recognition from his peers and media alike. February 2013 was his first runway showcase at New York Fashion Week.

It was an honor to be able to attend his September 2014 showcase at the prestigious Hudson Hotel. The show started out as a runway presentation of nineteen looks and then formed into a gallery setting, allowing us to get close inspection of the designs.

Livne’s cocktail and evening wear designs were inspired by the post modern architecture of Michael Havemeyer and underwater creatures. The clothing emphasized his signature elaborate structural details that coincided with his couture and handmade craftsmanship. The gowns, leotards and bodycon jumpsuits- ranging from neoprene to chiffon and leather; ran fluid in colors of black, silver, white, gray and lavender. The silhouettes were without a doubt, sexy and feminine. Soft fabrics (like the chiffon) complemented their more edgier counterparts (the neoprene and leather). If a gal ever wanted to wear that strikingly sexy piece for an event, Alon Livne is at the top of the list in that category.

Mark and Estel – NYFW September 2014

Los Angeles based ‘Fashion and Music Duo’- Mark and Estel showcased their Spring/Summer 2015 collection- “The Malibu Anthem” yesterday to a large crowd of eager fashionistas. The California casual collection had their signature rocker edge. There seemed to be a strict black and white color palette with specks of color here-and-there. The collection was infused with soft and flowy 100% cotton (found in t-shirts, sweatpants and denim) fabrics. The fabric was then treated to resemble silk, leather, wool and metal. Silhouettes were simple and sophisticated, ranging from easy breezy maxi dresses, blouses, tank tops to more heavier items like coats, mini skirts and pants. The finale ended with designers- Mark Tango and Estel Day rocking out to their self-written song and ended with “We love fashion…You are fashion… We love you!” What a great way to end my first NYFW show!

Isabelle Donola Presents "Faceless" Collection During NYFW September 2014

I was incredibly excited to learn that my friend and designer- Isabelle Donola was showcasing a collection during New York Fashion Week. I had met Isabelle when I was living in Los Angeles and she was also there, designing. The Brazilian-born designer has such a quirky and upbeat personality and style that it falls in tune with her design aesthetic. In 2008, she launched her namesake brand- Isabelle Donola NYC and has since dressed many clients, from artists to celebrities; while also participating in New York and Los Angeles fashion weeks. All her clothing is made in New York’s ‘Garment District,’ sticking to eco-friendly manufacturing methods and using only Italian and European fabrics. She uses her trademark “I.D. Technique”- a technique which combines draping and pattern making on a mental elaboration that it is turned into abstract shapes, which results in a perfect and unique fit. She was recently on season one of “Project Runway: Under the Gunn” and felt that it was a fun experience and opportunity. It was also very different from her normal work routine in that it had more constrictions and pressures. She has met some great people and felt a sense of community from her peers.

Her New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015 collection is titled “Face-Less” and featured eight looks. The garments were made from recycled Italian linen and knits. The looks were minimalistic, yet had quirky twists in either the fabric manipulation or the design itself. Her original collection had unfortunately been stolen, thus leaving her three days to create the other collection “It’s a real-life Project Runway, let’s do this!”. Monday’s show proved that she made what could have been impossible- possible. The inspiration for “Face-Less” is the beauty about being a human being- the purity of aiming towards perfection, juxtaposing with its flaws. “A lot of people put on masks throughout their daily lives…but this this collection, I want no masks. I want people to celebrate life and enjoy it. I just want people to feel confident and beautiful when they wear my collection.”

Isabelle is partnering with Luevo– a website where you and see the show and then shop the runway afterwards. The sale runs for about a month and prices run 35% less than the retail prices.
