Flea Style HOUSTON- May 7th

Flea Style (formerly The Dallas Flea) is taking its popular one-day market on the road this spring and setting up shop at Houston’s Silver Street Studios on May 7th. The event plans to have two shows a year in Houston (the second is slated for November 19th). Flea Style selected Houston as its first sister city location for its vibrant art scene and enthusiastic shoppers who have made their passionate demands heard for this curated marketplace hawking handmade, vintage and one-of-a-kind items to come to town. Attendees can expect 100-plus booths manned by artists, collectors, thrifters, junkers, pickers, painters, calligraphers, designers, potters and more. Vendors are traveling from all over Texas, and as far away as Oregon to showcase their wares. The incredibly talented lineup includes Tyler’s AAVintedge (vintage women’s clothing), Dallas’s Cowgirl Cuties (vintage cowboy boots), Portland, Oregon’s Ladies of Paradise (boho jewelry) as well as Houston darlings Manready Mercantile (gorgeous goods for guys and the home), Sunchild (beautiful handmade objects), Lynne Goode Vintage (retro/mid-century furniture) and Bole and Buck (rustic kitchen/home goods).

“We are ecstatic to bring our beloved show to Houston,” says Flea Style founder Brittany Cobb. “We know this hip and sophisticated city will love our unique market, where attendees can not only shop rare goods, but also meet the inspiring makers behind each item.”

Flea Style carefully curates its vendors to highlight unique, handmade, vintage and one-of-a-kind lifestyle wares, including: clothing, jewelry, art, furniture, décor, lighting, dog gear and children’s items. In addition to booths brimming with exceptional finds, shoppers can expect fun activities including The Shutterbus Photo Booth, a DIY floral crown station, live music and giveaways. And because even the most eager of shoppers needs to rest and refuel, there will be food trucks providing sustenance and a bar slinging drinks.

Flea Style takes place Saturday, May 7th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Silver Street Studios, which is located at 2000 Edwards St. The first 100 shoppers will score a free canvas tote goodie bag. Tickets are just $5 cash at the door, or skip the entrance line by purchasing pre-sale tickets HERE. Kids 12 and under get in free.

Damsel White Label Creates Buzz for Alternative Brides

The cold weather didn’t stop prospective brides-to-be and their friends from going out to Silver Street Studios Events open house this past week. The inaugural event, organized by Piper & Muse, was titled “The Creative Heart of Houston” and showcased several creative wedding professionals; including Cafe Natalie, Swift + Company and Flora Eventi. The event seemed to be quite interactive, ranging from mingling with industry experts, tasty food and cake sampling, a fun photo booth and a DIY station provided by Pop Shop.

The main reason I was there was to support friend and local bridal designer- Natalie Harris of the Damsel White Label, who hosted a runway show showcasing her latest creations. I would describe Damsel White Label, which launched in 2013, as ‘couture for the alternative bride,’ as her designs aren’t for the typical cookie-cutter bride. The rebellious yet sophisticated gowns feature unexpected details; such as killer stripes, edgy silhouettes, laces and bursts of color. The looks that evening also boasted bouquets constructed out of brooches and bits of fabric. Harris states that she designs for the Montrose/Heights/Austin-type gal in mind and creates styles that stay true to the wearer’s personality. She offers her client “Haute Custom Service,” where she takes her passion for design to the next level. She works one-on-one with the client, starting from the initial consultation and works with the bride to customize and make sure the dress is PERFECT for the big day. The entire collection that was showcased is customizable, from the hem length, a sleeve addition and even down to the fabric substitution. Harris showcased a floral print gown, where the print was actually designed by Harris herself, which that too, is also customizable. Harris goes on to explain, “Brides may order a custom print as a sentimental touch used as a print lining. Past clients have chosen everything from punk rock concert posters to a memoriam with a father’s army stripes or grandmother’s favorite flower. From the inside out, Damsel White Label strives to make gowns that make everyone say, “Oh, that’s so [insert amazing client’s name here]!”

If you are currently on the hunt for a fun yet edgy gown for your big day and want to break away from the tradition- definitely check out Damsel White Label.

Some take-aways from the event:

* Caftans are indeed VERY chic, thanks to Houston designer- Carla Christoph.

* Theresa Roemer (you may have heard of her ridiculously large three-story closet) showcased her namesake fashion brand. The clothing is manufactured by David Peck. She was also selling her brand of candles and signature truffles.

* The HERMES tray, faux fur vests and other curious assortments at Laurier Blanc.

* Sampling the ‘Sun A’ juice at the Big & Juicy Juice Bar/ Big Yoga booth.

* Wanting to show my California pride when I saw the California earrings at the Space Montrose booth.

* It was lovely meeting Travis and the guys behind Manready Mercantile. So hospitable! Loved that everything they offer is made in the USA. Oh and gentlemen, take note: one of their unique offerings are the ‘Beard and Mustache Treatments.’

* Finally seeing the Manoosh scarves in person. Yep, they are pretty amaze!

* The TREENG by New Living wooden statement rings… a MUST for 2015!

The whole pop-up shopping experience was just wonderful. It was nice seeing the smaller and local businesses getting the attention they deserve…and all under one roof.

Kudos to CultureMap and Lexus! Huge thanks to all the vendors and the CultureMap gals that were at the entrance, handing out warm welcomes to guests as they arrived. Tunes by DJ Bizonee.
