MADE IN LA… Well, this wall has a couple meanings to me. One, it is a cool art wall to take outfit photos; and two, I was literally made in LA. I was born in Los Angeles, but after my parents divorced when I was three, my mom and I moved out-of-state. I’ve always thought of myself as a ‘California Girl,’ even though I didn’t fully grow up there. I moved back to LA for college and lived there for an amazing eight years before deciding that the LA traffic was too horrific and the rents were too astronomical.

Los Angeles will always have a special place in my heart. I grew up sheltered and miserably shy. When it was time to go to the West Coast for school, I happily went and left my semi-skeptical family behind (oh you’ll never make it, etc). I came to outgrow my shyness (to a point) and I am so proud to say that I survived eight roller-coaster years in the second-largest city of the United States! I know the subway system and downtown by heart. I’ve met some good people that I still call friends. Oh and COFFEE BEAN & TEA LEAF… (sorry Starbucks). Well, ok, so I’m not a fashion designer, as I first intended on doing, but I can still say that I did in fact, make it. Even though I’m not happy with a certain school, I wouldn’t take back (most) of the experiences for anything.

I enjoy visiting the city every chance I get, as there are still numerous pockets of the city that I have yet to see. I enjoy the mountains, ocean, and diversity that the city has to offer. And yes, I still say “the” before every freeway number (and I LOVE it). I miss smelling the orange blossoms while walking through Los Feliz, Pasadena, and Silverlake [etc]. I miss how walkable most of the city is…I got the BEST exercise! I love how historic Route 66 runs through the city and ends in Santa Monica. Lastly, I miss the quaint historic Spanish architecture and quaint craftsmen-style bungalows (basically the vast variety of architecture that the city has).

I am a creative, weird, unique (etc) individual…I am MADE IN LA

If you’d like to check out the wall, on the side of Cisco Home Melrose (not sure for how long it’s there for), it’s on the corner of Melrose Ave. and N. Laurel Ave.

(Cactus Print Tee- Curated Cotton, Vintage Skirt- Coronation Vintage, Rope Sandals c/o Corda.)

Recently, the Mr. and I drove to Los Angeles. We stopped at White Sands National Monument for a couple days. It has incredibly beautiful landscape, with soft white grainy sand (gypsum) dunes encompassing miles of acreage. Once inside the park, you meander for a bit, passing by vegetation and sand dunes, until your car leaves the pavement and enters the main section of the park (barely vegetation and mostly dunes). The roads are covered in white; emulating snow. Funky picnic areas dot various areas. We got to experience the Sands in time for sunset, as well as in the morning (when the photos were taken). The blue skies were lovely, yet the air was crisp, while also windy (which helped set the tone for perfect photos).

This trip proved the perfect opportunity to break out my Corda rope sandals that I won in a giveaway a short while ago. After working with an orphanage for an month in Ethiopia, the folks behind the Corda brand noticed that many of them would leave the program with no job opportunities. After brainstorming, they came up with the idea of creating a brand where they could help the transitioned adult orphans by giving them vital training and sustainable jobs. Each rope sandal is handmade in Ethiopia with eco-friendly and durable rope. They are also 100% Vegan. They are pretty lightweight and machine-washable. Since I was still breaking in the sandals, I did notice that the straps were somewhat stiff, but all they need is a little adjusting. I was assured that the straps stretch about a finger’s width. I’m confident that the more I wear them, the better they will feel.

I HIGHLY recommend a visit to White Sands. A great mom ‘n pop place to stay is the White Sands Motel!

My friend Sofia and I ventured over to the posh West Ave River Oaks shopping center to have brunch at Pondicheri– Houston’s uber-cool Indian restaurant, that is also known for their delectable and colorful Instagram account.

Since it was a nice, almost-spring-like day, I opted for my flowy palazzo pants that I found at my friend Kime’s shop in Yucca Valley, and paired it with one of my 1990’s California souvenir t-shirts. I topped off the outfit with faux turquoise baubles, my vintage, thrifted, woven sandals; my new-to-me vintage 1980’s Christian Dior sunglasses and my vintage Coach handbag.
