Flea Style HOUSTON- May 7th

Flea Style (formerly The Dallas Flea) is taking its popular one-day market on the road this spring and setting up shop at Houston’s Silver Street Studios on May 7th. The event plans to have two shows a year in Houston (the second is slated for November 19th). Flea Style selected Houston as its first sister city location for its vibrant art scene and enthusiastic shoppers who have made their passionate demands heard for this curated marketplace hawking handmade, vintage and one-of-a-kind items to come to town. Attendees can expect 100-plus booths manned by artists, collectors, thrifters, junkers, pickers, painters, calligraphers, designers, potters and more. Vendors are traveling from all over Texas, and as far away as Oregon to showcase their wares. The incredibly talented lineup includes Tyler’s AAVintedge (vintage women’s clothing), Dallas’s Cowgirl Cuties (vintage cowboy boots), Portland, Oregon’s Ladies of Paradise (boho jewelry) as well as Houston darlings Manready Mercantile (gorgeous goods for guys and the home), Sunchild (beautiful handmade objects), Lynne Goode Vintage (retro/mid-century furniture) and Bole and Buck (rustic kitchen/home goods).

“We are ecstatic to bring our beloved show to Houston,” says Flea Style founder Brittany Cobb. “We know this hip and sophisticated city will love our unique market, where attendees can not only shop rare goods, but also meet the inspiring makers behind each item.”

Flea Style carefully curates its vendors to highlight unique, handmade, vintage and one-of-a-kind lifestyle wares, including: clothing, jewelry, art, furniture, décor, lighting, dog gear and children’s items. In addition to booths brimming with exceptional finds, shoppers can expect fun activities including The Shutterbus Photo Booth, a DIY floral crown station, live music and giveaways. And because even the most eager of shoppers needs to rest and refuel, there will be food trucks providing sustenance and a bar slinging drinks.

Flea Style takes place Saturday, May 7th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Silver Street Studios, which is located at 2000 Edwards St. The first 100 shoppers will score a free canvas tote goodie bag. Tickets are just $5 cash at the door, or skip the entrance line by purchasing pre-sale tickets HERE. Kids 12 and under get in free.

My dear friend and Vintagepreneur™- Sandra Mendoza, recently opened her first storefront- Debutante Clothing, in the heart of Downtown Pomona. She has been collecting vintage clothing from the 20s through the 90s for over twenty years. Eventually, her passion of hunting, finding and collecting vintage gems led her to start selling it online in 2005. Sandra mentions, “My passion for vintage glamour has led to me work on so many different aspects of vintage from selling to costume designers to writing for magazines. If it’s old and glamorous, I love it!”

Her new shop is housed in a registered historic building that was built in 1910. You enter through elegant old white French doors that once led into a reception area of a hotel that used to be above the shop. Debutante Clothing is more of a quaint boutique; with personable service, feminine black and pink decor and exceptional vintage. Multiple racks line the walls, while vintage accessories and other unique items lay strategically merchandised throughout the room. Sandra sells a variety of categories, ranging from some menswear to designer vintage and coveted lucite and metal handbags. She also sells some vintage-inspired pieces and a t-shirt of her own design that boasts: Lucite & Cherries & Leopard & Lipstick. I feel that she offers product that can fit practically any budget, yet the quality of everything is of the utmost highest standard. Most importantly, you can bet that when you shop at Debutante Clothing, not only are you getting amazing service from the owner (who is ridiculously knowledgeable about vintage), but you are also helping to support local and small businesses!

Bustown Modern is the brainchild of husband + wife team Anessa Woods and Paul Fogt, who share a mutual love of vintage and antiques. Their concept began when they realized that they were passing up items that they didn’t “need,” whereas other people would want them. They then started buying and selling on eBay and rented a space at a local antique mall. After seeing positive results and their business and the quality of merchandise grow, they strayed away from eBay and ventured on to open up a web store. It wasn’t until January 2014, that they packed up, moved across the country and opened their brick-n-mortar on Melrose Ave.

The little Melrose shop is truly a gem and great addition to the area. It has a modern feel, yet houses treasures that are rare, unique and just…oh-so-exquisite on a historic level. When asked about a great piece of clothing that has been found to date, Paul responds, “We have lots of favorites. Some are in our closets. Some are long sold. Every piece has a story, whether it’s the brilliance of the piece itself or just the memory of how we came across it. Anything haute couture is always great because it’s so special. There were only a finite number made and that piece you’re holding is the only one exactly like it ever – it was handmade for someone to their exact specs. We’ve also had a lot of unique pieces that are just so unique or really rare and you feel privileged to have gotten to see, feel and photograph them.”

They offer a little something for everyone, both style-wise and price. Prices range from $50 for the cutest little Paloma Picasso coin purse (everrrr) to $5,000. As Paul states, “A lot of high-end shops get hung up on designer labels only. Yes, we have tons of designer things but we don’t necessarily have them because they’re designer. We buy by the piece, for the piece. Whether it’s designer or not, we look more at design, quality, construction, rarity and how the piece fits into current and future trends. Anessa has an incredible eye and it really resonates with people. We try to offer a very curated collection and when people come in the store or look at our website, we think it really shows.”

I had such a amazing time checking out their curated collection of clothing, accessories and jewelry. This is one of the very few shops in Los Angeles that you can actually touch and feel a Sant’ Angelo, Galanos, Cardin or Halston. This part of Melrose is definitely my little piece of vintage heaven.
